People And Growth Rate Of Somalia

Somalia, the country in the horn of Africa might be a small country in terms of size but the population of the country is currently estimated to be about 10 million. Also with a growth rate of 2.4% per annum, this population is one of the fastest growing populations in the world. The sex ratio of Somalia is fairly decent, with 1.01 males for every female. It is estimated that about 85% of the residents are ethnic Somalis speaking the traditional Somali language. About 62% of the population resides in rural areas whereas the rest a part of the now growing urban cities of Somalia.
The work division is as follows: 60% are known as the pastoral nomads who are the nomadic or the semi-nomadic people who are mainly involved with livestock and using them for their daily needs. A certain amount of those people keep moving in the fertile zone present between the Shebelle and Juba River. The remaining 40% of the population is engaged in government jobs, trading, industry, handicrafts etc. A staggering fact reveals that nearly 40-45% of the population lives on a daily income of 1 USD, which is very less compared to the standards of living in all other countries. The Somali culture is not exclusive in itself. Most of the culture started developing in the 7th century, when the local people started interacting with Arab and Persian traders. Today, 99.9% of the population follows Islamic faith with a single Somali language. In this Muslim population, most of them follow the Sunni sect. The family system in Somalia is based on clans with 5 of them being the major ones: Darod, Dir, Hawiye, Isaaq and Rahanweyn. The society is also known to follow endogamy rule for marriage. The astounding fact is that only 24% of the population can read and write showing that education must be given importance for this horn country to progress.
